How Windy Is Too Windy to Fly a Drone?

By VectorWX. Sources reviewed .

Wind is too strong when it exceeds your aircraft instructions or leaves you unable to complete the flight safely. There is no single wind-speed limit for all drones. Compare sustained wind and gusts with the rating for your exact model.

Start with the Aircraft Rating

Find the maximum wind resistance in the manufacturer specifications. Check the model name and the conditions attached to the rating. For example, a rating for takeoff and landing can differ from an in-flight rating. A published range must stay a range. A wind-level label is not a speed in knots. Never use the aircraft maximum airspeed as its wind-resistance limit. The model directory keeps these fields separate and links to each source. Use the current aircraft manual if its instructions differ from an older specification. DJI Inspire 3 flight-phase specifications.

Read the Altitude and Gust Fields Separately

The free VectorWX summary shows surface wind, surface gusts and sustained wind at 80 m / 262 ft AGL. Check the location and forecast valid time before using those values. A surface gust is not a measurement of the gust at your planned height. The 80 m value also does not measure wind at 400 ft. Match the forecast units to the aircraft rating before comparing them. If the relevant field is unavailable, use another suitable source and site observations. An absent value does not mean calm conditions. VectorWX wind-height methodology.

Check the Complete Route

Look beyond the launch point. Consider exposed ridges, roof edges and the direction of the return leg. Leave a clear option to land if progress toward home becomes poor. Repeat the weather check if the launch is delayed or the route changes. A green weather assessment alone cannot establish that the mission is safe. Under Part 107, the preflight assessment includes local weather, airspace and the risks to people and property. Review those items together, then use the checklist to record your decision and any conditions that would make you stop. 14 CFR 107.49 preflight assessment.

Read Wind at Flight Height. Check current drone weather or the Chicago forecast before planning a local flight.

Planning aid only. Check conditions at the flight site and use an official briefing. A weather page does not grant flight or airspace approval.
